1st Annual Andrew David Arenson Memorial Alumni Game
says “Thank You” and “Goodbye” to founding father
Coach Andy Arenson
Members of the original Lagrange Lacrosse coaching staff joined league President John Basso this past fall to say Goodbye and Thank You to co-founder and coach, Andy Arenson. After many years of coaching and teaching in the Arlington School District, Coach Arenson retired and will surely be missed by all of the fortunate students and athletes that he has mentored over the years.
Coach Arenson, a Baltimore native, played collegiately at Morgan State and was a member of the famed “Ten Bears” team. Since moving to our area, Coach Arenson has touched many in the lacrosse community. Coach Arenson has served as the head coach at Vassar College and is responsible for bringing this great game to the Arlington School district. Beginning In 1998, Coach Arenson formed and coached the Arlington Lacrosse club at Arlington High School. That first year they competed as a club team in a private school league culminating in their first ever league championship. The following year, Arlington made the move to Varsity status and Coach Arenson was named the first coach for the inaugural Varsity program. Coach Arenson was at the helm for several successful varsity seasons, and after a brief retirement, he was soon convinced to come back to coach Arlington High School’s first ever Junior Varsity program. His success continued with a record of 30 wins and 1 loss over two seasons.
In the year 2000, Coach Arenson continued to grow the game by co-founding the Lagrange Lacrosse Youth Program along with Club President John Basso. With the inception of the youth program he was able to fully develop his “Acorns to Oaks” philosophy. To date, over one thousand boys and girls have come through the Arlington-Lagrange Youth and High School Programs, many of whom went on to compete and succeed at the collegiate level.
Sadly, Coach Arenson's retirement was short lived. He passed away on Thursday May 8th 2014. Coach Arenson will always be remembered as a teacher, student, and ambassador to the game .He is well known for educating many youth and high school players about the traditions and origins of lacrosse. Thanks to his hard work and dedication, we have all benefited.Words cannot describe his impact on the game of lacrosse and this community.
" Its not the dates you were born and died that matter,it's the dash in between that counts"
Thank You Coach Arenson!
